Starting an Art Collection: What You Need to Know

PC Starting an Art Collection

Starting an art collection can be an exciting and rewarding journey, and for many reasons.

“A collection means many things to people. For some, it’s a way to express their passion for art; some consider it an investment; for others, it is simply looking to decorate their wall space,” comments Hana Refai, Head of Privilege Club.

“Whatever the reason may be, building an art collection is, itself, a work of art. It takes time, money, and requires being on your toes and taking a risk every now and then,” she adds.

There’s much to be considered before you take that first step. That is why our experts have compiled a list of tips to get you started.

Set a Budget

This isn’t always easy, especially when passion is the reason you’re buying. That is why it’s important to determine how much you’re willing to spend.

Art can range from affordable prints to high-end originals. Set a budget to help you make informed decisions and avoid overspending. Don’t be in a hurry to grab anything though. This is a process

Know What You Like

If you are collecting to satisfy your love for art, then try to get to know what you like and what you would love to see on your walls at home. "If you find yourself leaning towards the work of a certain artist then follow them on social media and look out for solo shows and group exhibitions,” says Hana.

Art as an Investment

If you are looking for an investment, then look at particular types of art or artists. You will need to look out for established artists or at least those that are mid-career. Galleries can usually tell you about an artist, their career and if their work has increased in price and also if there are any limited collections they have produced.

Remember that artists don’t always signature their artwork. "Make sure you request a certificate of authenticity to be fixed to the reverse of the artwork, so you don’t find yourself in a complication when you decide to sell," says Hana.

Display and Care for Your Collection

Once you get your artwork home, try out different places where you think you will be able to appreciate it more.

Move it around every few days until you find that perfect spot. Try to avoid any damage to your carefully chosen piece by placing it away from direct light or air conditioners

Insure Your Collection

Caring for your collection also requires taking every step necessary to protect it, including insurance.

Don’t forget to insure your art collection. As it increases in size and value you will need to document it and maintain records of the invoices. This will make it easier to insure against any loss or damage.

As your art collection grows, you will see it as an expression of yourself, so try to buy what you love!
