How to protect your artworks

In order to increase the longevity of your artwork and to keep it in pristine condition, it needs to be protected from elements.

We’ve got some tips to help you do this successfully.

If Your Artworks are Displayed

  • Keep them out of direct sunlight. Your art collection might crack or fade if exposed to bright sunlight for long periods of time.
  • Do not lean anything against them, since it may lead to scratches or tears.
  • Dust them with a clean, soft cloth to remove any dust. Avoid using cleaning products or even water.
  • Hang them away from air conditioners or any place they may be subject to changes in the atmosphere, like areas of high humidity or condensation.
  • Place them far from places where they may collect grime, like cooking areas or places with a lot of insects.
  • Check your artwork regularly for any cracks or fading. If you catch these early on, you could avoid further damage.
  • Try to use UV protected glass for framing (to provide protection from the sunlight) and acid free paper for backing your artworks (to avoid any moisture reaching it).

If Your Artworks Are Stored

  • Store your artworks away from anything that might press against the surface. When storing, don't lean them on one another. Separate them with pieces of cardboard to avoid damage.
  • Pack your artworks according to size and nature. Put a heavy piece of cardboard over the front and back to protect the art from any damage. The best solution is to bubble wrap each item and place them in a custom-built wooden carton or a cardboard box.
  • Do not cover artworks with plastic for long periods of time. If the air is humid, they may start to grow mould.
  • Check the condition of your artworks periodically, even if they are packed and stored away. A quick check can help you find cracks and fading early on and avoid prolonged damage.
  • If your artwork came to you in a tube, don’t leave it in the tube. Remove it and allow it to lie flat.

If You Have Ceramic and Glass Artworks

  • Try to display your ceramics and glass in a safe place
  • Ceramic plates should not be displayed on metal prongs. Over time, the metal prongs can damage the surface of the ceramic piece, chipping or cracking it.
  • Do not soak porous ceramics for long periods of time. They should be washed gently or simply wiped clean with a damp cloth. Soaking them causes them to absorb water, which could cause cracking or water stains.
  • Keep them out of the sunlight. Although, most ceramics and glass are not affected by strong light, it is best not to leave them in bright light for long periods of time.
  • Always hold the whole piece firmly and carefully, when lifting. If you grab on to just a small protruding detail on your vase, plate, or other piece, it may break off.
